The RUDI Water Project in Tanzania

RUDI (Rural Urban Development Initiative) is a Tanzanian NGO focusing on developing small scale farmers and co-operatives through various programs. RUDI is the implementing partner on the CECE program funded by CLUSA for the development of the co-operative sector in Tanzania. The RUDI program is of strategic importance for 4Life as its addressing small scale farmers which in most African countries is the largest sector in terms of population and employment.

THE PROJECT BACKGROUND

The project activity under this VPA targets households in different villages in Shinyanga and Ruvuma Regions in the host country Tanzania. The RUDI WATER Project is implemented by the local NGO RUDI and is a Farmers Cooperative program targeting farmers groups and the general population. The partnership between RUDI and 4LIFE SOLUTIONS will envisage to work with 20 cooperatives in 6 Districts spread out between Shinyanga and Ruvuma regions for the purposes of RUDI WATER PROJECT

THE PROJECT SCOPE

The project includes the distribution of total 10,000 SaWa bags. The distribution is done by the RUDI staff in the initial stages and later during the project implementation different models of co-operative engagement will be tested. The RUDI staff is trained. The SaWa bags will be sold at a subsidized price of TSH 500 per bag. The income from price of the bags are used to pay the purposes of the project is to collect data on buying behaviour and price elasticity in this setting. The pilot project are aiming at establishing a sustainable SaWa distribution model with RUDI targeting small-scale farmers through co-operations. The project is a carbon credit project.
